Monday, June 15th 2015 - Pre-Philmont

Hey everybody, it's me, your friendly Internet JD. Or JDizzle, if you prefer that. I'd probably respond better to JDizzle now that I think about it. But I digress. Allow me to introduce myself, and then we can get down to business. I am a soon-to-be Freshman attending the University of Maryland, College Park in the Fall as an engineering student, which means I'm stuck in this awkward interstitial summer between high school and college. Hence the name of the blog. School ended for me around the end of May, and since then I've felt fairly lonely -not in a depressing way-  and bored, and a lot like I'm not going much of anywhere, so, in the fashion of public written expression, I've decided to once again take up the torch of blogging. Because that totally works, right?
So, let's start with where I am right now. Currently, I'm writing this post from the business center of a hotel in Albuqurque, NM. Why am I in New Mexico? That's a great question, I'm glad you asked. I'm in New Mexico because I'm going the Philmont Scout Ranch, where I'll be backpacking for ten days straight. Something I'm really looking forward to, because it's incredibly beautiful there, and the last time I went, I made some incredible memories, and got some pretty nice stories out of it.
It would seem to be that my answer to the question "how to fight boredom?" is spend two weeks with 12 other guys in the high desert/mountains of New Mexico while not showering for ten days. Weird answer, right? Well, y'all just wait until I get back from it and have all these crazy stories to tell and pictures of me doing stupid things. That's the thing about the trail, it warps you perspective. Sure, you learn to appreciate things like cars and HVAC a lot more, but it also messes with your sense of humor and your priorities. I have looked over photos from my previous trip to Philmont, and I couldn't help but wonder What on earth am I doing in this picture? Despite that scathing self-evaluation, I really can't wait to hit the trail. I'll tell the new ones when I get back.
See y'all later!
